The study reflects on nursing education from an epistemological perspective. A documentary review of classic texts and scientific literature was carried out to establish a frame of reference. The tensions between the biomedical and biopsychosocial models that impact on the formative processes are analyzed, considering the Australian context of Chile. The results highlight the need to strengthen critical thinking and the inclusion of historical aspects of science in nursing education. In addition, pedagogical practices that erroneously teach biopsychosocial care based on biomedical interpretations were identified. It is concluded that it is essential to adopt contemporary pedagogical and philosophical approaches that strengthen the discipline and the biopsychosocial model. It is proposed to incorporate formative topics such as emotionality and death, using innovative approaches such as pedagogy of death, sentipensar and theoretical foundations such as those of Charles Taylor.
