Abstract

Introduction: Periodontal diseases are a global health problem and several risk factors are related to its etiopathogenesis. Objective: To determine the association of periodontal disease with some risk factors. Methods: A case-control study was designed with a sample of 68 patients (23 cases and 45 controls), selected by probability sampling, between September 2022 and February 2023. The variables age, sex, smoking, oral hygiene and periodontal disease were evaluated using the Russell Periodontal Index and the Love Oral Hygiene Index. The data were analyzed using odds ratio, 95% confidence interval, and a statistical significance of p <0.05. Results: The 35 to 59 age group (69.1%), female sex (51.5%), smoking (64.7%) and poor oral hygiene (72.1%) predominated in the studied sample. No risk associations were found between age, sex, smoking, and poor oral hygiene and periodontal disease (p>0.05). Conclusions: Age, sex, smoking, and poor oral hygiene were not significantly associated with periodontal disease.
