Abstract

Introduction:  Patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) that need renal replacement treatment exhibit a high incidence and prevalence of B and C hepatitis virus infection. Objective: To determine the prevalence and to identify the factors associated with Hepatitis B and C in the Matanzas hemodialysis unit. Method: In 2021 a transverse analytic study was carried out. The universe was constituted of 206 patients with end-stage renal disease that attend the hemodialysis unit of the county. The information was picked up through the clinical records of the patients and the results of the determinations of viral load for hepatitis virus B and C; respectively. The ethical precepts of the investigation were completed. Socio-demographic variables and epidemiology features were included. In the statistical analysis, absolute and relative frequencies and the Odds Ratio were calculated. Bivariate analysis and the bias factors were controlled using the logistical regression of the program SPSS. Results: 51% of the patients had hepatitis, predominating hepatitis C, the male sex, Caucasian, and, those older than 60 years. The time in the hemodialysis unit was identified as a factor associated with infected patients, the rest of the variables were confounding. Conclusions: The infection from the virus of hepatitis B and C the prevalence of remained high. Strict monitoring of security measures and frequent screening of viral serology protects against the transmission of this illness.
