Abstract

Introduction: Hemodialysis is the treatment used as a substitute for chronic renal function failure; however, the placement of venous accesses is not exempt from complications.

Objective: To evaluate the prevalence of chronic complications of angioaccess in adult patients on hemodialysis in a private hospital in Mexico City. Materials and methods: Retrospective, descriptive, observational study carried out at the Nuevo Sanatorio Durango Hospital in Mexico City from January 1, 2019 to December 31, 2021. Sample: 96 Internal Medicine and General Surgery patients. Exclusion criteria: incomplete files. Results: Male predominance: 62.5%, mean age: 61.41 ±13.05 years. 72.9% required hemodialysis secondary to diabetic nephropathy. Complications derived from these venous accesses: 14.6% thrombosis, 1.6% aneurysm, 3.2% steal syndrome and 26% infections. (Fisher Test: p <0.05) Conclusions: This study shows that the main 2 complications of hemodialysis accesses are infections and thrombosis, which coincides with the reported epidemiology. We propose patient education measures to prevent them.
